XXII. Tagung über Pferdekrankheiten im Rahmen der EQUITANA

The XXII. Tagung über Pferdekrankheiten has been a thorough success. Top-class speakers from Germany and all over Europe gave interesting lectures from different topic areas which provided for highly content participants (633) who lively took part in the discussions. The trade exhibition with its numerous exhibitors also attracted a lot of attention from the practitioners who utilized the breaks between presentations to explore and swap ideas on the latest products and services in the area of equine medicine. Many of them also took the opportunity to visit EQUITANA, which takes place parallel to the conference, and were positively impressed with the offerings of the Equestrian Sports World Fair.

For the first time, the first conference day was held entirely in English (with simultaneous translation into German), which was predominantly appreciated by the participants.  During the first orthopaedic section, Prof. Kristin Olstad from Oslo and Prof. Ottmar Distl from Hanover presented the latest insights on pathogenesis, genetics and possible prevention of osteochondrosis, before Prof. Anton Fürst  from Zurich reflected on the different conservative and surgical treatment options for bone cysts. The presentation by the renowned Dr. Sue Dyson from Newmarket on the correlation between ultrasound diagnosis of proximal suspensory desmitis and post mortem examination also captured a lot of attention. Her study showed that ultrasonographic examination allows an accurate diagnosis of such injuries; however, there were limitations to the detection of adhesions using ultrasonography. The lecture was followed by interested questions from the audience before the participants sought the opportunity to explore the trade exhibition during the coffee break, where next to products and information they were also treated to all sorts of culinary delights….
